version. Starring Robert De Niro, James Woods,
Elizabeth McGovern, Tuesday Weld, William Forsythe,
Treat Williams, Danny Aiello and, in her film debut,
Jennifer Connelly, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA is Leone's
homage to the gangster movie and perhaps one of the
greatest New York movies ever. Set on the battleground of
Manhattan's Lower East Side, the narrative unfolds through
the perspective of De Niro's character "Noodles" as he and
his childhood gang go from poor Jewish street urchins to
prohibition-era organized crime kingpins. Though the story
(and the running time) is truly epic, Leone has supported his
tale with breathtaking photography, exquisite production design
and beautifully calibrated performances by a first-rate cast.
