A horror movie that is also a gentle satire of
New Zealand's
national identity, BLACK SHEEP
vividly imagines the insanely
horrible
consequences of genetically engineered sheep
that go
rogue, resulting in vast herds of stupid,
once-docile livestock
that turn into murderous,
fiendishly clever flesh-eating monsters!
Directed by Jonathan King, BLACK SHEEP features
a splendidly
high gore-quotient and excellent old-school
(non-CGI) special
effects, a nod to the style of early
Peter Jackson using real sheep,
animatronics and puppets. Renowned effects house
Weta Workshop (King Kong; The Lord of the Rings) created
the mutant mutton, while Jackson's facility Park Road Post
handled all post production.
Like the GODZILLA movies, BLACK SHEEP's outrageous
narrative also tips its hat to modern anxieties about what
happens when man tries too hard to influence nature.
BLACK SHEEP is not yet rated by the MPAA and
runs 86 minutes.
