An IFC First Take / The Weinstein Company Release

IFC First Take will open SNOW CAKE, a new film starring
Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman and Carrie-Anne Moss,
at New York's Cinema Village (22 East 12th St.) and in
select cities on Friday, April 27th. An IFC First Take/The
Weinstein Company release, SNOW CAKE will also be
available the same day "on demand" as an IFC IN THEATERS
presentation with Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner, Cox,
Insight, and on PPV through DIRECTV. Written by first-time
UK screenwriter Angela Pell and directed by UK-based
Marc Evans, SNOW CAKE features Weaver as audiences
have never seen her before, in a sensitive and moving
portrayal of a high-functioning adult with autism.

Tight-lipped Englishman Alex Hughes (Rickman)
arrives in Northern Ontario on his way to meet the
woman with whom he's had a son. He's convinced by
an altogether unconventional but lovable 19 year-old
hitchhiker Vivienne (Emily Hampshire) into giving her a ride to her hometown of Wawa. When the car is hit by a truck on the outskirts of her hometown, Vivienne dies instantly, and Alex finds himself grieving for someone he never knew.

Shocked and stranded in snowbound Wawa, Alex is drawn to seek out Vivienne's mother, to talk to her in person about the fate of her daughter, which is how Alex comes face to face with Linda Freeman (Weaver) and discovers she is no ordinary mother. As Alex becomes increasingly involved in Linda's life and the community to which she feels complete indifference, in part because of her condition, Linda in turn becomes attached - to the degree that she is emotionally capable - to Alex , and to what he can do for her. In the meantime, Alex forms a relationship with Linda's sexy, independent neighbor, Maggie (Moss), and becomes the object of scrutiny by the ineffectual local law enforcement officer Clyde (James Allodi), who, besides being jealous of Alex's new relationship with Maggie, believes he's discovered a dark secret in Alex's past.

SNOW CAKE is a UK-Canadian co-production produced by Gina Carter and Andrew Eaton from Revolution Films and Canadian based Producers Niv Fichman and Jessica Daniel from Rhombus Media. It was an official selection of many 2006 film festivals including TriBeCa, Toronto and Berlin, where it was the opening night film. IFC First Take is a newly-created label that acquires and distributes 24 films a year, releases them nationwide, and simultaneously offers them "on demand" to cable subscribers.
